Camera - Sekonic Zoom Master L-508

Camera - Sekonic Zoom Master L-508

This meter does wonders. The incident light capability is probably the best feature, and it can measure light from a flash set-up. This was the reason I bought it. The telescopic zoom reflected light function is great for inaccessible subjects or for just factoring a small part of the subject (say a shadow detail).

I bought this second hand and had to put those little labels on as the printed writing had been worn off by the previous owner.

L-508 manufactured from 1997 - 2003.

From Camera to Computer: How to Make Fine Photographs Through Examples, Tips, and Techniques

Ever wonder what it would be like to get inside the head of an accomplished photographer as he chooses a subject, works the scene, selects an image, and then edits the result into a piece of photographic art?

As a follow-up to his successful first book Take Your Photography To The Next Level, author/photographer George Barr now applies the practice to the theory. Go along with George as he searches for subjects, sorts out scenes, refines his composition, and then moves from Camera to Computer to edit his images, not only correcting flaws, but making the images match his vision.

You'll see proof sheets and "not quite there" images, and you'll learn tips on image editing from someone who is focused on creating a fine art image rather than mass producing many similar images-often the goal of commercial photographers.

With his friendly, easy-to-understand approach George goes beyond how to edit your images by teaching the whys behind the editing process. This book is certain to help you dramatically improve your own images.

Topics include: Finding photographic subjects Working the scene Practical issues in composition What to change in a captured image How to edit your images-a practical, easy workflow

This is the third assignment for the Strobist 102 class, seminar, thingamajig that I have been participating in. The idea was the vary the apparent light size (the actual size of the light itself doesn't change) and see the effects that the light has on the subject. So when looking at the lemon, check out the shadow.

1) Bare bulb: Nice hard shadows

2) Homemade Grid: Same hard shadows, the grid (which can be seen in the large image at the bottom) barely changed the apparent size of the lightsource, hence the same hard shadows. It did focus the flash beam significantly.

3) Homemade softbox: Again this can be seen in the last image, it's the giant white thing. I had it left of the lemon (fairly far out, approx 30 cm away). The shadow is getting softer as the box increases the apparent size of the light source.

4)Homemade Softbox: now I placed it about 10 cm away from the Lemon. Same physical size of the lightsource, but in relation to the subject, larger. Hence the softer shadow.

5) Bounced off the roof: Obviously the roof would make the largest apparent light source available to me (apologies on the angle change) and has the softest shadows.

6) Flash bounced off a handheld white shopping bag (approx 24x36 cm) held approximately 30 cm away from the subject. Still a very large light source in relation to the lemon, but not as large as the roof. Second softest shadows. I don't really have much equipment yet, but it's possible to do this one with just crap lying around the house.

All shots were taken with my Vivitar 283 (shown) with DIY VP-1 Mod and Cactus V4 triggers.

Image Title: Carolina Chicken
Format & Equipment: large format Toyo View camera
Presentation details, framing style/dimension cm: 75 x 50cm Lightbox Duratrans

Description/ Background of the piece (100 words max):

My photographs document peoples attempts to copy and to mimic other places, objects and events. It looks at cultural expansion and the notion of the individual in this expansion, and how eccentricity occurs out of this.
The Sanctuary series are photographs of takeaways in London Suburbs. They were originally mounted in lightboxes’s to evoke the vividness of the shop fronts and facades that make up London’s streets. Each shops harsh lighting sets it apart from the dark night outside. Similar to Hopper’s paintings of night-time cafes, these photographs evoke a sense of architectural and social isolation in their brightly lit spaces. Particular attention is given to focusing the attention of the image onto the characters inside the shops and the notion of the sanctuary of the shop itself. The sanctuary is also a visual one, yet one that is absurd. The shops overt signage allude to well known American fast food brands, Mimicking and mirroring these brands in their own unique way. Yet in doing so they become something entirely different and unique.

North Pole Weather Bureau in Rudolph scene with creator/designer RGM

The weather bureau just placed into the Rudolph scene in the workshop of StudioM. This is where Santa's elves check the high tech equipment to inform Santa of weather conditions for his Big Night Out. The Goldfinger tests wind direction. The elf inside is reading complicated data sheets to determine foggy conditions ahead. The Pine Space - as opposed to Pine Gap - radar dish complete with ears on each side is still to be put up. The spinning cups to read the wind strength will be put on as well. In the background the silhouetted reindeer are playing ping pong in the exclusive Deer Club House, which welcomes all brown noses. Designed and made by StudioM 2006 at our workshop. Used by the promotional company which contracted us to design the windows and then contracted us to make the window scenes for them to use in the David Jones Christmas windows 2006.
Taken at StudioM workshop with RGM, the designer and creator of the scenes, not long after Kate Westgate, who was the VM manager from DJ's responsible for the windows at the time of the tender, inspected its progress at our shed studio, before going to London.
Juanita in Clifton made mice to my design and drawings and directions and elves to our design drawings of this scene and specifications.

Copper Exchange Capacity of Clays and Their Potential Effect on In Situ Copper Leaching

he U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted Cu exchange tests for six common clays under simulated in situ leaching conditions. Regression equations were obtained from the data expressing the Cu exchange capacity as a function of Cu concentration, pH, and temperature. Using these equations, an analysis was made of the impact each clay could have on overall Cu recovery. The results suggest that Ca and Na montmorillonite clays could have a major impact on Cu recovery and that attapulgite and illite clays could have a smaller, but still significant, impact. Kaolinite and ripidolite clays pose little threat to loss of Cu from in situ leaching solutions.

Ergonomic Assessment of Musculoskeletal Risk Factors at Four Mine Sites: Underground Coal, Surface Copper, Surface Phosphate, and Underground Limestone

This study examined musculoskeletal injury risk at four mining sites: underground coal, underground limestone, surface copper, and surface phosphate. Each site offered opportunities to investigate musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) injury risks and how those risks might be identified and categorized. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) worked with these sites to (1) identify work activities that showed evidence of MSD injury risk, (2) examine physical risk factors that can lead to MSDs for a handful of work tasks at each site, and (3) develop a set of ideas for problem-solving to help reduce risk factors for examined work tasks. For each site, NIOSH implemented a plan that was refined over the time period of this study. The plan consisted of four steps. The first step was to use mine injury records, a musculoskeletal discomfort questionnaire, front-line supervisor interviews, and a list of management concerns to identify work groups and work activities that have significant evidence of MSD risk factors. The second step was to select work tasks for evaluation. The third step was to interview those who do the work and make observations to characterize the MSD risk factors and musculoskeletal symptoms that exist for target tasks. The final step was to conduct brainstorming sessions with workers who perform the work or have a stake in the production task. The brainstorming sessions served to identify general strategies (ideas) for reducing MSD risk factor exposures. A final report of findings was presented to mine management and workforce representatives at each site. The risk factors and ideas for improvement identified for each site were specific to the target tasks examined. These target tasks were diverse, but there were some key similarities. For instance, jobs were found at each site that required a significant amount of manual work involving the upper extremities and low back. Handling heavy and awkward objects, forceful arm and shoulder exertions, and working in awkward postures were common for a variety of jobs across the four sites.

Pinehurst Playfield

Pinehurst Playfield

I've long lamented the lack of truly dangerous playground equipment on modern playgrounds -- it seems that children aren't _allowed_ to get bumps and bruises anymore. Therefore, I was thrilled to run across this playground tonight, which not only has a nicely dangerous junglegym, but it's actually _cooler_ equipment than what I remember having!

Really simple -- you grab the pole, step onto the little platform, and it spins. Of course, you instinctually hunker down and hug into the pole so you don't go flying off, which increases how fast you're spinning around and around.

_SO_ much fun!

Dizzy, cracking up and trying desperately to stand up without staggering all over the playground.

(All of these photos were taken by Prairie. Kinda hard for me to handle the camera when I'm horsing around like this.)
